Postal History of the Confederacy
When the Civil War began in 1861, the Confederate States of America needed to build its own postal system from scratch. With Union stamps declared invalid in the South, the Confederacy rushed to design and issue its own postage. The very first Confederate stamps featured President Jefferson Davis. Over the next four years, just 14 different designs were released, many showing Davis, plus George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, & John C. Calhoun.
A Postal System in Wartime
Despite shortages of paper and ink caused by the Union blockade, the Confederate Post Office kept the mail moving. Stamps were printed in Richmond, New Orleans, and even in London, with designs ranging from finely engraved portraits to simple stone lithographs. Before the official issues were ready, local postmasters even created their own provisional stamps — rare survivors that are prized collectibles today.
Adversity Covers
Another fascinating aspect of Confederate postal history is the use of “adversity covers.” Because paper was scarce, Southerners often created envelopes by repurposing wallpaper, old maps, book pages, or business ledgers. These handmade covers are striking examples of how people coped with shortages during wartime, and each one is unique. Collectors treasure adversity covers today because they highlight the human side of the conflict, showing how ordinary citizens improvised to keep communication alive in desperate times.

Why Collect Confederate Stamps?
One of the reasons Confederate stamps are so appealing is that the series is small and manageable. With just 14 major designs, it’s possible to build a complete collection — something that’s nearly impossible with US stamps, which number in the thousands with more still being produced. Together they form a unique, self-contained chapter of American postal history. Collectors can take pride in knowing they can realistically acquire a complete set of these historic stamps and preserve an entire story in their albums.
