When the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, the American colonists wanted equal representation and relief from unjust taxes. Fighting continued for over a year before the Continental Congress took steps to separate the colonies from the United Kingdom.
On July 2, the Continental Congress voted unanimously to declare the 13 colonies as independent states – the United States of America. Two days later, Congress ratified Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence. It was then distributed, and read publicly.
Contrary to popular belief, the famous “official” document that’s on display at the national archives, wasn’t actually signed until August 2.
