Texas’s Secret Marihuana Tax Stamps

Did you know Texas used to have a “marihuana” tax, even though the substance is illegal in the state? The tax was only in place from 1989-2016, and made tax evasion another offense marijuana buyers and sellers could be charged with in addition to possession of an illegal substance. The state printed silver foil stamps to cover the tax. They pictured the grim reaper and the words “Drugs, Death, Taxes.” It’s doubtful any were bought for their “intended purpose,” but they’re certainly fun collector’s items!
