Stamps Are a Reminder of Resilience—Enjoy Them Today

November 5th, 2024

Dear friend and fellow collector,

I don’t know about you, but I’ve decided it’s about time to stop and take a breath, start finding more joy, treating myself better…  You know what that means for me… my stamps.

Since I last wrote, I’ve found myself sliding into the habit of reading and listening to too much election news, political polls, and tales of woe coming from both sides of the political beat.  And frankly, I’ve had enough.  As a human being, citizen, and voter, I’m doing what’s right: treating my fellow human beings well, being a good citizen, and exercising my privilege of voting.  Those things I can control.  The rest I can’t.

As a reward for doing the right things, I’ve decided I deserve to feel more upbeat and peaceful, to focus on something besides the anxiety of politics.  You and I can both feel more cheerful, upbeat, like we did before the election swung into full gear with its 24/7 chatter.  We deserve this.  Come on, you know we do! 😃

You may be asking how we’ll manage to pull this off, you and I.  I know we can do it by spending more quality time relaxing with our stamps.  Savoring their history, their beautiful art and clever designs, what they symbolize.  And honestly, just this minute, I had a revelation.  I was looking at the presidents honored on my stamps, the wars commemorated, the acts of heroism and the acts of Congress, the taking care of people when the chips are down.  I realized stamps are a way to appreciate something even greater than the individual persons or events on them.  Stamps are a panorama reminding us that through the ups and downs of those presidencies, wars, and other huge events of our 250-year history, our country has survived.  Wow, I never thought of stamps in quite that way before.

I’m suggesting you get your stamps out today and consider that.  I think you’ll feel better – more relaxed, more cheerful, and best of all, more hopeful.  I know I do!

Happy collecting!

P.S.  Our stamps are a whole other world where we can go to forget our cares for a while… where we can find peace and relaxation.  More than that, they’re a reminder of America’s greatness and ability to survive.  Even presidential elections!
